What is Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum

The Corpus callosum is the main network of nerve fibers that connects our left and right brain hemispheres.

My son Charlie was born without his corpus callosum, and I am a strong advocate for awareness of this rare condition.

My husband and I were informed at the routine 20 week scan. During the scan, we were not given any information about the impacts of this disorder, and it was also advised not to us investigative or research the disorder on the internet.

Being a rare condition with a large spectrum that is not completely understood, we were advised that we would come across to many conflicting and confronting stories, however, for myself, being a passionate and curious mum,  I needed to know for myself the details of this rare disorder. I looked it up in my Anatomy/ Physiology books that I had from my study as a remedial massage therapist.


We were reassured that our baby was at the lower end of the spectrum and we felt positive, always having a deep knowing that our strong little boy would be ok.

He was born healthy and strong at nearly 9 pounds! However they discovered also that he had hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain) in which he had surgery at 3 months to insert a reservoir/shunt.

My son is absent of a large part of his brain and he has had brain surgery. What an amazing kid we have..
Charlie is currently doing so well with all the early intervention and support we have put into place.
Which has made all the difference in his world and has prepared him for school, as well as socially and physically.

Charlie and our family are involved with the Queensland Brain institute as one of 40 families involved in important life changing research into this rare condition.
