Becoming a massage therapist

Written by Maggie Nolan

It all started in 1994!

As a teenager, I always enjoyed giving my mum a massage, it was our time together, time I could spend with her uninterpreted.
She would sit on the lounge room floor while watching T.V. and I would massage her achy shoulders.
She was the one who encouraged me to study massage therapy, and when I look back now, it always brings a smile to my face.

I have always been a giving person, and love to support and help others. I felt that massage therapy could be my way to express who I am and support others. So when I was 18, I embarked on my journey as a massage therapist.

I started with a 16 week certificate in therapeutic massage., followed by a 3 month sports massage practitioner course. Back then, I was the youngest in my class, I loved the course, and I took it all in my stride. I learnt so much valuable information that I still use today.

From there I gained employment as a massage therapist in a clinic, at Brisbane massage therapy centre.
I can still here the receptionist answering the phone and the layout of the clinic, the aromas of the oils and the busyness of the day. I learnt so much as a young therapist and gain so many skills.

In 2003, I decided to complete my Diploma in Remedial Massage and start my own mobile massage business as well as a home based business in Paddington.

Over my working career, I have worked alongside Chiropractors, Acupuncturists, Physiotherapists, other massage therapist and I still continue to work in combination with other therapist in my local area.

In May 2014, I decided to open my own clinic, and Time to Unwind on Anzac Avenue in Hillcrest, was born.

It has been a wonderful journey so far, I love having the flexibility to work my business around my three children. I am proud to be in my chosen industry, helping my clients everyday with my years of knowledge in many different modalities I have learnt over the years, these include:

Remedial massage, sports massage, deep tissue massage, trigger point release techniques, muscle cupping for myofascial release and traditional glass flame cupping, dry needling and pregnancy massage.

I am also a fully qualified mat work and small equipment Pilates instructor as well as a Reiki Master.

I have had a long term passion and love for my work, with experience, skills, intuition and knowledge in my chosen profession which I would love to share it with you in my relaxing clinic environment in Hillcrest.

And although I have been in this industry for over 24 years now, things still remain the same.
Not much has changed in the massage industry, to me it's still the same fundamentals of giving to others, this will never change, which makes massage therapy timeless.

Over the years, massage has helped to support my income.
The support of others through massage therapy, has helped to create who I am today.

My journey has been amazing, it's educational, enlightening, inspiring, challenging, life changing, purposeful, educational and unconditional, and best of all being a massage therapist keeps me young! ??

It takes an inquisitive person to explore the unknown, but it takes passion, persistence, determination and willingness to stick to something that drives you..

Massage therapy has become part of me and a part of myself that I will always give to others.

and it all started from the encouraging words of the most important person in my life... my mum

with love
